Community Action Northumberland is proud to support new North East Warm Homes service

Community Action Northumberland (CAN) is delighted to be part of a major new regional initiative launched by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness to help families stay warm and reduce their energy bills this winter.

The £2.3m North East Warm Homes service – part of a wider £4m programme funded by the North East Combined Authority – will offer free, trusted guidance to residents right across the region. The service brings together local partners to make practical energy-saving solutions more accessible, from insulation and draughtproofing to heat pumps and solar technologies.

As a key delivery partner, CAN will work alongside Groundwork North East and Cumbria to provide in-home energy visits in communities across Northumberland. Our team will support households with free, impartial and personalised advice to help identify the most effective ways to improve home energy efficiency and lower heating costs.

Mayor Kim McGuinness said:
“Heating bills are tough, so we’re doing what we can to support families through the winter months. If we want to lift children out of hardship, we must tackle fuel poverty and keep money in hardworking families’ pockets. That’s why we’ll be offering this free advice service, so our communities can reduce their heating bills and live in warm, comfortable homes.
We’re proud to work with organisations right across the North East to make sure this is delivered in every corner of our region, helping more families to take action and benefit from a fairer, greener future.”

The Warm Homes service, delivered by Energy Saving Trust, is available to residents across all seven local authority areas and includes:

  • Free expert telephone advice from Energy Saving Trust – available now.
  • In-home energy visits delivered in partnership with Groundwork North East and Cumbria and Community Action Northumberland.
  • End-to-end support for energy-efficiency improvements, provided by Warmworks.

Support is available not only to homeowners, but also to private tenants and landlords, ensuring that more people can access the help they need.

Residents can also use Homewise – a free online tool that generates a personalised energy-efficiency report within minutes, offering tailored recommendations, estimated upgrade costs and potential energy savings.

Whether residents need quick, low-cost fixes like draughtproofing or are exploring bigger upgrades such as insulation or renewable technologies, North East Warm Homes will guide them every step of the way.
