Community Action Northumberland News

Since October 1981 Community Action Northumberland has published its own bi-monthly newspaper Community Action Northumberland News. Originally printed in tabloid format it contained 4 pages of news and information relevant to relevant to parish councils, community groups and voluntary organisations in Northumberland. The paper is distributed free to Parish and District Councils, the County Council, village hall and Age Concern committees, the rural clergy and many voluntary organisations. Copies are also available to the public in the county libraries.

The first issue, then entitled Northumberland Community News, was edited by Alison Hooper and all the articles were contributed by Community Action staff. The stated intention was “At first the material will come mostly from the Community Council (now Community Action) itself and the various organisations that are associated with it but other organisations with similar aims are invited to use it.” .... and so it evolved with Alison and subsequent editors encouraging contributions from a wide spectrum of organisations and individuals in Northumberland.

Towards the end of 1982 Dr Rosemary Lumb, CAN’s new Rural Officer took over as editor, until her untimely death in May 1993.
Kate Duckham then took over the reins, followed later by Anne Lowrie and from November 1997 Alan Hedley, who continued the policy of producing a balanced mix of articles to inform, educate and entertain the readership, until his enforced early retirement in November 2008.  Since then, the reins have been taken up by Louise Currie, our Community Initiatives Officer.

Comments received from a reader survey at the beginning of 2009 have resulted in a change of format.  Starting with the June/July 2009 issue, CAN News was changed to an 8-page, A4 portrait format, with larger text and more photographs.  We hope that our readers will continue to find the publication useful and interesting.

From January 2010 we are also starting to send out E:bulletins containing items of interest, on a monthly basis, between hard copies of CAN News.  If you would like to receive these please let us know via
sueandrew@ca-north.org.uk and we'll add you to the distribution list.

The editor welcomes contributions from community groups, voluntary organisations, charities, local authorities and individuals who may have items of interest and relevance to the communities of Northumberland. Email Louise on either louisecurrie@ca-north,org,uk or info@ca-north.org.uk

Details of publication dates and copy deadlines are issued annually and the back page of each issue displays the copy deadline date for the next issue.

The CAN News deadlines for 2010 are:
15 March for the March/April, Spring issue
18 June for the June/July, Summer issue
17 September for the September/October, Autumn issue and
