CAN's Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday, 7 November 2007 at the Newton and Bywell Community Hall, Newton, Stocksfield.
This brand new hall with picturesque views over the Tyne Valley, is the product of massive efforts by the local community to replace the previous dilapidated structure. Mr Adrian Hinchcliffe gave a short presentation covering the history and refurbishment of the Hall, and acknowledged Community Action Northumberland’s valuable support. The official opening had been performed by HRH the Duke of Gloucester.
Our President, the Duke of Northumberland, introduced Mr Derek Morris of Calor, sponsors of the Calor Village of the Year competition, who gave a brief report in relation to the awards. He congratulated Acklington on their success and wished them luck with the national awards, and congratulated the runners-up,Wylam and Norham, for all of their hard work. The Duke then presented the winners with their certificate and cheque, and the runners-up with their certificate. Unfortunately, Wylam representatives were not able to attend the AGM
The guest speaker was Ms Jill Dixon, Deputy Chief Executive of the County Council on the theme ‘Transforming local government in Northumberland: opportunities for the voluntary and community sector’ - and her enthusiastic presentation was not only informative but gave the opportunity for attendees to put questions.
